Why UK travellers love Delhi
Delhi is where old and new India meet head-on: Mughal forts and Lutyens' colonial avenues sit minutes from glossy metro lines and rooftop bars. For British visitors it is both a destination in its own right and the natural starting point for the Golden Triangle - Delhi, Agra and Jaipur - the most popular first-timer's route in India. With the most frequent direct flights from the UK of any Indian city, it is also the easiest to reach.
Which eVisa do you need for Delhi?
For a holiday, sightseeing or visiting friends and family, UK citizens need the India Tourist eVisa. If you are travelling for meetings, conferences or work-related visits, look at the Business eVisa instead. Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is a designated eVisa port of entry, so you can land on an eVisa without any complication. Compare all options on our visa types page.
Top things to see
- Red Fort & Old Delhi - the Mughal heart of the city, best explored on foot or by cycle-rickshaw through Chandni Chowk.
- Humayun's Tomb - the elegant precursor to the Taj Mahal, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Qutub Minar - a soaring 12th-century victory tower in the south of the city.
- India Gate & Rajpath - the ceremonial centre, especially atmospheric in the evening.
- Akshardham & Lotus Temple - two of modern India's most striking places of worship.
Best time to visit
The comfortable season runs October to March, with warm days and cool evenings ideal for sightseeing. April to June brings fierce heat, and July to September the monsoon. December and January can be foggy - occasionally disrupting flights - but the cool weather suits British visitors well. Getting there and arriving
Direct flights from London Heathrow to Delhi take around 8 to 9 hours with British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Air India. On arrival at Terminal 3, follow the e-Visa immigration counters and have your printed eVisa, passport and e-Arrival Card ready. Allow extra time during the busy early-morning bank of UK arrivals. See our processing time guide to make sure your eVisa is approved well before departure.
