How long does an India eVisa take?
For the great majority of British applicants, an India eVisa is approved within 3 to 5 business days. In practice many are issued far sooner - often within 24 to 72 hours - but you should always plan around the full window rather than the best case. The Indian authorities ask that you apply a minimum of four days before your date of arrival; we recommend allowing at least a week so there is time to respond if any detail needs clarifying.
Rule of thumb for UK travellers: apply about a week before you fly. It costs nothing to hold an approved eVisa early, and it removes all of the last-minute risk.
Typical timelines by visa type
Processing is broadly similar across the categories, because they all pass through the same Indian e-visa system. As a guide:
- Tourist eVisa - usually 3 to 5 business days. Tourist eVisa guide.
- Business eVisa - usually 3 to 5 business days; occasionally longer if supporting business details need review. Business eVisa guide.
- Medical eVisa - usually 3 to 5 business days; apply early given the nature of medical travel. Medical eVisa guide.
- Conference eVisa - usually 3 to 5 business days; allow extra time as an invitation letter is involved. Conference eVisa guide.
When should a UK traveller apply?
The eVisa is valid from the date the Indian authorities approve it, and your permitted stay is calculated from your arrival in India, so applying early does not shorten your trip. There is no advantage to leaving it late and a great deal of risk. Our advice:
- Ideal: apply 1 to 2 weeks before departure.
- Minimum: at least 4 days before arrival, as required by the Indian authorities.
- Never: the day before you fly - there is no guaranteed same-day route.
What can delay your India eVisa
Delays are almost always avoidable. The usual causes are:
- Photograph problems - the most common single cause. See our photo requirements guide to get it right first time.
- Passport scan issues - a blurred, cropped or expired passport bio page.
- Mismatched details - names or dates that do not exactly match the passport.
- Peak season volume - applications around major holidays can take longer.
Having everything ready before you begin is the best defence. Our requirements checklist lists exactly what you need.
How you receive your approved eVisa
Once approved, your eVisa arrives by email as a PDF. Print at least one copy and keep a digital copy on your phone - it is checked by your airline at the UK departure gate and by immigration on arrival in India. If you have not received it within the expected window, check your spam folder first, then get in touch with our support team.
Timing questions from UK applicants
Most are approved within 3 to 5 business days, and many sooner. The Indian authorities advise applying at least 4 days before arrival; we recommend a week to be safe.
There is no separate government fast-track. The best safeguard is to apply early with a complete, accurate application and to watch your email for any request for clarification.
Your eVisa is emailed to you as a PDF. Print a copy and keep it on your phone - you must carry it, as it is checked at your UK departure airport and on arrival in India.
Usually a photo or passport scan that does not meet specification, mismatched personal details, or applying during peak periods. A clean, accurate application with correct documents is the best way to avoid delay.
