UK passport and travel documents for India

It is one of the most-searched questions by British travellers planning a trip to India, and the answer is refreshingly simple: yes, UK citizens need a visa to enter India. There is no visa-free entry and no visa-on-arrival for British passport holders arriving as tourists. The good news is that for almost everyone, the visa is an entirely online process - the India eVisa - that you can complete from home in about fifteen minutes.

Yes - and there is no way around it

Unlike some short-haul European destinations, India requires every British visitor to hold a valid visa before boarding their flight. Airlines at Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester will not let you check in for an India-bound flight without one. There is no "sort it on arrival" option for UK tourists, so arranging your visa is a non-negotiable part of the pre-trip checklist.

If you hold a British passport and you are travelling to India for tourism, business, medical treatment or a conference, you need a visa. The only question is which one.

The India eVisa - the route most UK travellers take

The India eVisa (electronic visa) is an online authorisation linked to your passport. You apply on a website, upload a photo and passport scan, pay in pounds, and receive an approval by email as a PDF. You print it, carry it, and show it on arrival. Most British travellers use the eVisa because it avoids any trip to a visa centre. It comes in four categories:

When you need a regular (sticker) visa instead

The eVisa covers the vast majority of UK travellers, but not every situation. You will need a traditional sticker visa, applied for through VFS Global in the UK, if you plan to:

  • Enter India overland at a land border - the eVisa is only valid at designated airports and seaports.
  • Stay longer than the eVisa permits, or work/study on a long-term basis.
  • Undertake journalism, missionary work or certain other restricted activities.

What you need to apply for the eVisa

Before you start, have these ready - the full list is on our requirements page:

  • A UK passport valid for at least six months from arrival, with two blank pages.
  • A digital passport scan and a recent photo meeting the photo specification.
  • Your travel dates and an address in India.
  • A UK debit card, credit card or PayPal to pay in GBP.

How far in advance should you apply?

The Indian authorities ask for a minimum of four days before arrival, but we recommend applying at least a week before you fly. Most eVisas are approved within 3 to 5 business days - see our processing time guide for the full picture. There is no benefit to leaving it late, and applying early removes all the last-minute stress.

What about children?

Every traveller needs their own visa, including babies and children. A parent completes each child's application separately. We cover this in detail in our guide to the India eVisa for children and families from the UK.

The bottom line

UK citizens absolutely need a visa for India, but for the overwhelming majority it is a quick, fully online eVisa rather than a trip to a visa centre. Choose the right category, get your documents ready, apply about a week before you fly, and print your approval. Do that and the visa becomes the easiest part of planning your Indian adventure.
